Aiken is home. Our shop is on Village Green Boulevard, a short run from downtown and from the training track. This is a town the Winter Colony built: Northern families came south for the season from the 1880s and left behind large shingled cottages, wide parkways, polo fields and a working Thoroughbred industry that is still here.
Two Aiken things change the job. The historic district keeps a great many of its streets and lanes **unpaved on purpose** — sand, for the horses — and a garage at the end of one of those lanes lives in a permanent supply of the stuff. Sealed rollers and a sound bottom seal are not an upgrade at those addresses, they are the specification. The second is the buildings: carriage houses, converted stables and detached garages from the 1890s through the 1930s, with masonry and timber openings that no current standard size fits. We measure those at several points and shim to the building rather than forcing a door into it.

Our shop is in town, so Aiken calls are the shortest runs we make and usually the first of the day. On a sand lane we arrive expecting the track to be full of it, and on a carriage-house opening we expect to measure before we quote. Neither is a surprise here.
