Graniteville was built around one of the South's first textile mills, founded by William Gregg in 1845, and the village he laid out is still the shape of the place. Rows of small company-built houses on tight lots, the mill buildings and the creek at the centre, and the Vaucluse and Warrenville villages strung along the same valley.
Almost none of these houses was built with a garage. What is here was added decades later — carports enclosed, sheds converted, single bays squeezed into a small lot, often with framing and headers that were never engineered for a door of any weight. So the first thing we do in Graniteville is read the structure: what the track can actually be anchored into, whether the header will carry an opener, and whether the opening is square enough to hang a door in. Driving a longer lag screw into tired framing is not a repair, and we will say so rather than doing it.
