A bumper tap in a tight drive, a limb down in a summer storm, a bottom rail that has finally gone soft — one bad section can make a solid door look finished. Usually it is not. If the frame, tracks and remaining sections are sound we replace the damaged panel alone: profile, gauge and colour matched to the run, hinges and struts transferred or upgraded, and the door back to full structural strength the same visit.
The bottom section is nearly always the one that goes in this county, and there are two versions of it. On steel doors it corrodes from inside the channel, where humid air and wind-blown sand sit against bare metal behind the seal retainer. On the older wooden doors still in service around the mill villages and the Aiken historic district, the bottom rail rots from ground moisture and splash. Either way it is the section the lifting brackets anchor to, which makes it structural rather than cosmetic.
On the historic-district houses and the older mill-village homes there is a real preservation argument, and we make it rather than defaulting to replacement. A well-built older wooden door suits those streets in a way no modern panel quite manages, and a sound one with a new bottom rail, properly sealed end grain and new hardware will outlast most of what would replace it. Where a door is genuinely finished we say so plainly — but we look first.
