North Augusta sits on the South Carolina bank of the Savannah River, looking across at Augusta. It has changed a great deal in twenty years: Riverside Village and the ballpark on the riverfront, Hammond's Ferry laid out as a walkable new-urbanist neighbourhood beside it, and the Greeneway running through the middle — all of it alongside the older hillside streets that have been there since the resort-hotel days.
Hammond's Ferry is the part that needs a different approach. It is built the old way on purpose: houses close to the street, garages at the back off a service alley, reached by a lane shared with the neighbours. That means tight turning, no room to stage a truck carelessly, and garages that often sit under living space so noise matters more than usual. We plan the alley access before we set out, and we lean hard toward belt drives there. The older hillside streets are the opposite problem — steep short driveways and original detached garages from an era of much smaller cars.
